Abstract
The aim of this study was two-fold: (1) identify differences in technical-tactical and physical performance when comparing against two levels of opposition; (2) identify relationships between physical parameters, and technical-tactical performance indicators in academy level association football. The study used 34 matches from a season in an English football club academy against two levels of opposition. Games were coded for 19 technical-tactical performance indicators, and 4 physical parameters that covered both offensive and defensive aspects of the game. The data was analysed through a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to assess aim (1), and follow up correlation tests to investigate aim (2). The results of the MANOVA showed that there was no difference in performance as a whole when comparing performances against category 1 opposition to category 2 opposition (p = 0.114) but possession, goals scored and goal efficiency individually showed differences between opposition level (p < 0.05). Among others, some interesting relationships were found between final third entries and crosses, set pieces and shots, and regains and goals scored (r < 0.4, p < 0.05). The study concluded that there were no differences in performance against different levels of opposition at academy level football, meaning it is difficult to predict performance based on the opposition and harder for coaches to plan training sessions and game strategies. Further research needs to be conducted into the complex relationship between different performance indicators and the interactions between the offensive and defensive aspects of the game.
